AT&T announced iPhone costs today, and I am not happy. The iPhone 3g costs $2500 for 2 years. The iPhone is really expensive because (1) The $30/month x 2 year data plan contract is required (even though I have wifi and don't want the slower 3g) in addition to a voice plan, plus all of AT&T's scandalous junk fees and taxes, and (unlike the iPhone 1) further SMS fees.* That's a lot of nickels and dimes! (2) To add insult to injury, because, like half the nation, I'm already a AT&T customer, AT&T slaps me with an additional $200 fee. That just sucks. 8( source and pdf details
In contrast, with my Treo 680 (much more powerful than an iPhone) or the dumb phone I found in the trash, I'm now paying only $312 for those two years. The iPhone costs that much plus 2000 double cheeseburgers!

Chris,
I agree on the cost of the iPhone. The situation is the same in Japan. I already have a bit costy cell phone only a ways into a 2-year contract from Softbank (with features I'll never use, but wanted anyway). The cost to switch over PLUS the monthly data fees, which are absolutely necessary because pay through the nose as you go is not a data plan I'd like to have.
