Chop up a bar of soap (I used a couple little hotel bars) then melt with boiling water in a pan. Stir in 1/2 c arm and hammer washing soda and 1/2 c borax, and store in old one-gallon Tide bottle. Shake before each use of 1/2 c per load. Avoid nasty chemicals and save some $50/year cf. Tide.
Variations: Replace washing soda with baking soda or OxiClean. Try flavoring with essential oils or spices - I experimented with vanilla, cardamon, and orange peel. Try this recipe for washing dishes too. In fact you can use just about any combination of these ingredients to clean laundry, bathrooms, or just about anywhere else! I had a little soap left over, and used it to make liquid hand/body soap for the shower.
